Surprise! I’ve been working on a nonfiction book coaching course.

Update: It’s here! The 5-Star Manuscript Map to a Brand-Building Book

You ever feel like you’ve been running a marathon and you forgot to grab your paper cup of Gatorade?

January felt like that for me. I wrapped up two really lovely coaching clients and started two new also-lovely clients, but normally I like to stagger starts so that I can give them my full attention as they’re getting onboarded.

(I don’t run marathons. Or half-marathons. My knee likes to dislocate itself at inopportune times 😬 … like when I’m crouching down to “Boo!” my kid… or teaching her how to Floss (don’t ask). And then I have to… well, I won’t squick you with the details, but suffice it to say, to get it back into place requires nerves of steel.)

On top of that, I’ve been working really hard on the Nonfiction Book Mapping™️ course, which is a book coaching course for nonfiction writers! It’s been more work than I anticipated, but as my husband would tell you, I randomly scream during office hours when I finish up a piece that I’m really, super, extra excited for.

So the work is very worthwhile!

And as we rounded into February, everything all started to slide 🛝 seamlessly into place.

Behind the Scenes of Creating My Book Coaching Course

The people I was giving sneak-peeks of the curriculum to were sending me texts with multiple ❣️❣️ exclamation points. Clients were settling in well and making a ton 🏋️ of progress on their books. Friends introduced me to multiple new 😍 potential clients—and as those of you who’ve been around awhile will know, my business was 100% word-of-mouth referrals for many years, so getting back to that is lovely, too.

It’s something I kept telling my partner again and again:

When you’re ready for it, it comes. The Universe sends you what you want and need when you show it you’re ready for it.

You can substitute “Universe” with your preferred term.

The point is that sometimes things feel like they’re so hard… like you’re putting in all this work and nothing’s coming of it… like you’re never going to get your head above water.

And then, a shift happens. You’re ready. And the big fella in the sky, or the Universe, or the flying spaghetti monster nods and says, “Yep, you’re ready.”

And that’s when things get easier.

I knew I needed to get this course foundation in place so that I could better support my clients—current and future. I knew that when it was ready, everything else would come easier.

And that’s exactly what happened. As I started completing each module and lesson, as I edited each video and created each handout… well, things started getting easier.

It wasn’t even done yet, but the Universe knew I was ready, and so it gave me new opportunities.

Sometimes that happens with writing books, too. Sometimes it happens with businesses or health or finances.

Put one foot in front of the other and write the next sentence. Check off the next to-do. Take the next breath.

Do that now and next month may be your easy month.

Why Did I Create a Book Coaching Course?

Anyway, I got a question on the last email of why I was creating a nonfiction book coaching course now (and presumably, not later or not before).

The reason I haven’t created a nonfiction book coaching course before is that I thought each client needed a truly, 100% bespoke experience. That’s true to some degree, and they still do get a bespoke experience, but I wanted to supplement it to make coaching even more valuable.

There are two big reasons now was the time for a ready to go nonfiction book coaching course:

  1. I want to make book coaching even more effective for clients by providing “off-line” learning they can do so that when we get together for one of their coaching calls, less time is spent explaining or teaching and more time is spent working side-by-side on their book to make it even better.

I started last year by creating lesson plans for my fiction clients, based on the coaching methods I already used for coaching fiction, and so far, it’s been a hit with my fiction clients!

Recently, one new client told me she was “blessed” to have this process and I honestly teared up. #Blessed to have her as a client, too, and you know who you are! So far, it’s been magical and I don’t know why I didn’t do it sooner (other than 2023 just being a dreadfully busy year and personally emotionally difficult).
  2. The other reason is that I want to make book coaching more accessible for more authors. It’s an investment, I know. By creating a self-led option, more future authors can get a tried-and-true process to follow to write a really great book.

For some people, private coaching isn’t necessary—they don’t need as much help with questions, as much feedback, or as much accountability; they just need to know what to do. I’m a bit like that, but I also really love feedback, so it depends on what the project is. And that’s the beauty of it—for some folks, writing a book is a project they want one-on-one support and feedback for.

For others, they just want to get it done alone.

Are you ready to write your nonfiction book?

So I hope you’re as excited for this to come to fruition as I am, and I hope that you feel ready to write the next sentence, check off the next to-do, and take the next breath.

Let me know in the comments when you’re going to start writing your book.
