Write a Better Book than Your Competition with Book Mapping

I always say that writing a book is one of the best things you can do to refine your coaching method, framework, or secret sauce. And Book Mapping helps you do it faster, easier, and end up with a better book than your competitors.

It’s true even here with writing out the content for a robust (but quick and easy!) curriculum, too.

Over the past 3 months, I’ve been working on distilling everything I know, and everything I do with my private coaching clients, into a self-led curriculum that gets as good of results for them and their books as me teaching it to them directly.

It’s called Book Mapping™️ and I’ve already had screams of excitement from some folks who got a sneak peak!

But today, I’m going to give you a sneak peak with 3 easy-to-apply Book Mapping tips. You can apply these tips to start writing a better book today!

Edit: Other people use Book Mapping in other ways, too.

And I’ve got some tips from you, based on what I’ve been working on!

3 Book Mapping™️ Tips

  1. Your topic THE most important decision you will make for the entire book. I teach several methods for finding the PERFECT topic and validating it once you’ve found it. And what I’ve discovered working with private clients is that we need all of these methods because you need to approach your topic from different angles to make sure you get it right. You can see one of the methods in the image below: The Topic Equation!
  2. You need 3 different types of Comps to really nail your market. I call them Friends, Foes, and Family. But sometimes I like to think of the Friends as Frenemies. Having a mix of these is crucial to getting in front of your perfect audience.
  3. Every. Single. Page. must be useful. No matter if your book is 100 pages or 500 pages, every single page in the book must be useful and engaging. There are great ways to do this and I talk about it more in the lessons!

The Book Mapping™️ course is going to be free for all my private and group coaching clients. I’m planning to start group coaching in March, and there’s still time to get on the waitlist.

Book Mapping Your Way to Better Book Than Your Competition

Using the three Book Mapping™️ tips—selecting the perfect topic, understanding your market through Comps, and ensuring every page offers value—sets you apart from the competition.

For instance, selecting the perfect topic isn’t just about what you know—it’s about what resonates.

Picture a business coach specializing in female entrepreneurship. Instead of a generic business strategy book, she focuses on unique challenges and triumphs encountered by women in the business world, immediately connecting with that audience. If she’d written a book about how she spends her day in her business, that wouldn’t have connected with the same audience. It may’ve connected deeply with an audience, but perhaps not the one she wanted.

Create your opus.

This free Writing Ritual Creator will not only track your word count, it’ll help you build the foundation you need to write your book.

You’ve also got to know what’s resonating with the market as a whole. Choosing and understanding a diverse group of comps will give you a holistic view of the competition and where your book might fit in with it. Imagine comparing your work not just to direct competitors but also to books that share your target audience’s shelf space, giving you insights into cross-promotion opportunities and gaps in the market. Friends, Foes, and Family!

Lastly, ensuring every page offers value transforms your book from a single “okay” read into a resource that your reader comes back to again and again. Think of adding quick exercises or reflection points that turn theoretical knowledge into actionable wisdom, making your book a tool rather than just a narrative. And don’t just add exercises to add exercises. They should each be valuable!

Using Book Mapping and levering these tips can elevate your book from good to indispensable. If you want to outshine your competition, address your reader’s needs—not your needs—and interests directly and compellingly.

Let’s change some lives,
