When it comes to writing a book that actually builds your business, LESS is usually MORE.
I keep seeing the same pattern with smart and savvy women business owners and entrepreneurs who come to me after months (or years!) of struggling with their manuscripts.
✨ They’ve written 30+ chapters of content
✨ They’ve poured their heart and soul into 100,000+ words
✨ They’re completely overwhelmed and no closer to finishing
This happens all the time. And it’s not your fault.
Because I know you want this book to be amazing, and I know that cutting the good stuff out can be hard. But you want your book to make and impact AND make money, so let’s find out how:
The Ideal Length for a Business Book That Actually Works
Just last month, a brilliant business coach came to me with a first draft that was essentially three books crammed into one. She had 32 chapters covering everything from mindset to marketing to management.
“I have to include EVERYTHING or my book won’t stand up against the other business books,” she told me.
But unfortch, that’s exactly the WRONG choice to take—because when you include too much, your book becomes less impactful.
This is so common. And you shouldn’t blame yourself.
We’ve been conditioned to believe that value equals volume. That a “real book” needs to be thick enough to double as a doorstop. That readers will judge your expertise by page count.
Some of the most impactful business books of our time are surprisingly concise.
The evidence speaks for itself:
- Building a StoryBrand by Donald Miller: 240 pages (on the upper end of ideal range)
- The War of Art by Steven Pressfield: 168 pages (concise yet powerful on creative blocks)
- Profit First by Mike Michalowicz: 178 pages (transformative business finance book)
- The Dip by Seth Godin: 96 pages (focused on knowing when to quit and when to stick)
@hollyostara The perfect nonfiction book length? 150-200 focused pages that readers actually finish. Not a doorstop, not a pamphlet. Just right for coaches, consultants and speakers ready to share their expertise without the bloat. According to a 2022 study by WordsRated, the average nonfiction book length has actually decreased by 42% in the last decade. Readers are consistently giving higher ratings to more focused, concise books.
And that’s because…
How Long Should Your Business Book Be? Quality Over Quantity
When working with clients on their 5-Star Manuscript Map, the first thing I often recommend is SUBTRACTION.
Another client came with a 40-chapter draft about leadership. After our mapping session, we narrowed it down to 12 focused chapters around ONE central framework.
“But won’t readers feel cheated if I don’t give them everything?” my client asked.
Noooo girl. The OPPOSITE.
According to publishing expert Jane Friedman, “The most common reason nonfiction books fail is because they try to do too much rather than too little.” Source: The Business of Being a Writer
From your reader’s perspective:
- They’re busy entrepreneurs with limited time
- They want solutions, not encyclopedias
- They need clarity, not information overload
When you try to cram everything into your business book, you’re actually DILUTING your message, not strengthening it.
The Perfect Business Book Length: 120-250 Pages
So! What actually works?
ONE damn good book with:
- ONE clear promise
- ONE powerful framework
- ONE transformation for your reader
This approach doesn’t just make writing easier—it makes your business book infinitely more effective at generating high-ticket clients, speaking opportunities, and brand authority because your readers will actually enjoy it and finish reading it.
I’ve seen this firsthand with clients who’ve gone from struggling with bloated manuscripts to confidently publishing focused books that actually WORK for their business.
Take my client Sarah (name changed). After we trimmed her sprawling 35-chapter draft down to a focused 10-chapter manuscript, she not only finished her book in half the time, but it led to:
- 3 paid speaking engagements within 2 months of publication
- 3 new high-ticket clients who reached out after reading
- A podcast tour that expanded her audience by thousands
And the best part was that her readers consistently send her emails with comments like, “This was exactly what I needed!”
